Your NCB Is One of the Most Valuable Things in Your Motor Policy. Most People Don’t Manage It Well.

No Claim Bonus [NCB]  is a reward your motor insurer gives you for not making a claim in a policy year. It works as a discount on your own-damage premium at renewal and grows to 50% after five consecutive claim-free years. Used correctly, it meaningfully cuts your insurance bill over time. Mishandled, it can vanish in one small claim.

How NCB Accumulates

NCB starts at 20% after your first claim-free year and grows in steps — 25% after two years, 35% after three, 45% after four, and 50% after five or more consecutive claim-free years. It applies only to the own-damage (OD) component of your premium, not the mandatory third-party cover.

Critical Rules Most People Get Wrong

NCB belongs to you, not the car. If you sell your vehicle and buy a new one, your NCB transfers to the new vehicle — but you must request this transfer and provide an NCB certificate from your previous insurer. Many people lose their NCB by not doing this.

Any claim, even a small one, resets your NCB to zero unless you have an NCB Protector add-on. Before claiming for a minor dent, compare the repair cost against the annual discount you would lose. If your accumulated NCB saves you ₹4,000/year, paying ₹3,000 for a small repair out of pocket protects far more value than claiming.

If your policy lapses for more than 90 days without renewal, your entire NCB is forfeited regardless of how many years you have built up.

Is an NCB Protector Worth It?

NCB Protector

An NCB Protector add-on costs roughly 5% to 10% of the own-damage premium and allows you to make one claim per year without losing your bonus. If you have built up 35% or 50% NCB, protecting it is financially sensible — the cost of the protector is far smaller than the value of the bonus you would lose in one claim.
